Y.1.3 Abdominal Lump in a child

Y.1.3 Abdominal Lump in a child

  • The specimen was recovered from a 3 ½ year old female child who presented with a history of fever and the intra-abdominal lump discovered during the examination of the patient.
  • At surgery the lump was found to be inseparable from the right kidney and also appeared to invade the liver and I.V.C. This lump was separated from the I.V.C. but removed together with the right kidney.
  • The lump weighed 681gms.
  • It is globular in shape, has a smooth surface and a thin semitransparent capsule with tags of fatty and fibrous tissue attached to it.
  • The underlying tissue appears pale with ill-defined dark areas interspersed.
  • The cut surface is necrosed mainly at the periphery.
  • The tissue appears friable.
  • The mass wedged between the two halves of the right kidney which shows a discrete rounded deposit which macroscopically appears same to the tumour tissue.

The possible diagnoses are;

  1. Neuroblastoma
  2. Rhabdomyosarcoma

Question
