K.1.1 Teratoma of the ovary

  • Uterus, fallopian tube and ovary are shown.
  • There is a cyst in the right ovary.
  • The cut open cyst has two solid masses - one inside the cyst and the other hanging down (taken from within the cyst to show the cystic nature of the tumour).
  • The masses have hair growing out of them.

 

Diagnosis - Mature cystic teratoma.

Teratomas arise form totipotent stem cells. 

We see tissue form all 3 embryonal cell layers - ectoderm, endoderm and mesoderm in this tumour.
