H.5.11 Kidney and part of the ureter with a tumour

  • A specimen of a kidney with ureter from a 60 year old female who presented with abdominal pain and abdominal lump for two months.
  • The abdomen had a ballotable lump on the right side.

  • This is a markedly enlarged, destroyed kidney with markedly dilated renal pelvis and part of the ureter which is also dilated. (Weight 450gms)
  • The surface of the kidney is irregular and lobular.
  • Because the kidney is dilated, the cut surface does not show any resemblance to a normal kidney except at the periphery where there is minimal renal tissue (blue arrow)
  • There are cystic areas separated by minimum renal tissue.
  • At the junction between the dilated pelvis and the ureter there is an infiltrative tumour (red arrow).
  • The histological assessment of this tumour revealed a Squamous cell carcinoma.
