F.4.1 Chronic venous congestion (Nutmeg Liver)
- Wedge sections taken from a liver at autopsy.
- The surface show fine nodularity.
- The cut sections appear like that of a nutmeg cut open, with dark congested areas contrasting with the paler areas.
- The diffuse irregularity of the surface is probably due to cirrhotic changes in the liver following recurrent periods of congestive heart failure – cardiac cirrhosis.
