Q.1.2 Amoebic appendicitis with secondary infection and abscess formation

  • The appendix has been bisected longitudinally.
  • The whole organ appears swollen.
  • Most of the serosa appears pale and thick.
  • In places there were haemorrhage.
  • The interior contains thick pus and distally an abscess has formed.
  • The wall appears friable.

 

  • In this specimen, the histology showed amoebae.
  • (Amoebic appendicitis is a recognized but a rare complication of intestinal amoebiasis)
