P.1.15 Adenocarcinoma of rectum

  • Abdominoperineal resection was done. The sigmoid colon, rectum and anal canal were removed and an end-colostomy was performed.
  • The growth has extended beyond the rectal wall, anterolaterally involving the posterior wall of the bladder.
  • Specimen shows the resected rectum and anus with anal canal.
  • There is a solid looking growth arising in the wall of the rectum, protruding into the lumen and partially obstructing it.
  • It also shows invasion upwards and downwards along the thickness of the rectal wall.
  • The outer surface as well as the cut surface of the tumour shows areas of haemorrhage and necrosis.
