O.4.3 Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis
- Specimen of small intestine with a portion of the wall of the resected ileum of a female patient admitted, with intestinal obstruction.
- The mucosa appears rather flattened and the outer wall contains numerous collapsed cysts – these are the pneumocysts.
- The outer wall looks dark and congested.
- This condition is a rare disease characterized by the presence of air filled cysts within the intestinal wall that may be iatrogenic or due to other aetiologies.
