E.3.4 Malignancy of gastro-oesophageal junction

  • Specimen of lower end of oesophagus, cardiac end of stomach, celiac lymph node, omental node and spleen.
  • A growth obstructs the upper part of the stomach.
  • Solid looking tumour with areas of haemorrhage.
  • Rugae stand out prominently and are thickened.
  • Lower end of oesophagus is thickened.
  • An omental node is enlarged.
  • Mounted coeliac node is enlarged and looks solid.
  • Spleen shows autolytic changes.

Differential Diagnosis      :     (1) Carcinoma of stomach infiltrating the oesophagus.

                                              (2) Carcinoma of oesophagus infiltrating the stomach.

 

Histology : Squamous carcinoma of oesophagus infiltrating wall of stomach. The stomach mucosa is devoid of tumour.
