E.3.4 Malignancy of gastro-oesophageal junction
- Specimen of lower end of oesophagus, cardiac end of stomach, celiac lymph node, omental node and spleen.
- A growth obstructs the upper part of the stomach.
- Solid looking tumour with areas of haemorrhage.
- Rugae stand out prominently and are thickened.
- Lower end of oesophagus is thickened.
- An omental node is enlarged.
- Mounted coeliac node is enlarged and looks solid.
- Spleen shows autolytic changes.
Differential Diagnosis : (1) Carcinoma of stomach infiltrating the oesophagus.
(2) Carcinoma of oesophagus infiltrating the stomach.
Histology : Squamous carcinoma of oesophagus infiltrating wall of stomach. The stomach mucosa is devoid of tumour.
