K.4.8 Adenomyosis of the uterus

• A 33 year old female was married for 12 yrs with no children.
• Uterine curetting showed cystic glandular hyperplasia.
• A laparotomy was done subsequently and there were lots of adhesions around the uterus.

• The uterus is large and globular.
• The uterine wall appears uniformly thickened with a thick endometrial lining (endometrial hyperplasia)
• The ovary is cystic and yellowish serous fluid oozed out when it was cut open.
• The tube at its fimbrial end is attached to the uterine wall.

• Histological examination of the uterus confirmed the diagnosis of Adenomyosis with the ovary showing a follicular cyst.
