V.3.2 Recurrence of thyroid follicular carcinoma

  • A 65 years old women presenting with a history of lump in the neck for5 years.
  • Sudden increase in size recently.
  • Pain on and off.
  • No change in voice.
  • No difficulty in breathing.
  • She has undergone thyroidectomy 2 years back.
  • The specimen is that of a nodule with an overlying skin.
  • The skin appears streatched over the nodule.
  • The cut section shows a well demarcated pale white solid homogeneous nodule almost adjoining the streatched skin.
  • The cut surface of the nodule also shows haemorrhagic areas in parts.
  • Histology confirmed a follicular carcinoma of the thyroid with capsular and vascular invasion.
