V.1.6 Multinodular colloid goiter

  • Thyroid gland of a 45 year old female presenting with a history of a lump in the neck of 25 years duration.
  • Gradual enlargement with no pain, no difficulty in breathing.
  • And no toxic or hypothyroid symptoms.

 

  • The specimen is that of the left lobe of the thyroid weight being 350gms.
  • The lobe appears globular in shape.
  • The surface is smooth.
  • The cut section shows a definite thick capsule which is seen to extend into the substance of the gland dividing the gland into compartments of varying sizes.
  • The cut surface shows solid pale white areas some of which show glassy colloid substance.
