D.3.8 Carcinoma of lung

  • The outer surface of the lung shows patchy yellow areas on the pleural surface.
  • Upper part of the specimen shows consolidated lung tissue, with the lymph nodes incorporated in the solid areas.
  • Some of the lymph nodes have broken down.
  • One bronchus, in longitudinal section, shows an irregular mucosal lining, and contains friable material in the lumen. ?Pus
  • In the lower part of the specimen, the small bronchi and bronchioles are clogged by white material.

Differential diagnosis:

  1. Carcinoma of lung with secondary deposits in lymph nodes.
  2. Tuberculous bronchopneumonia and pleural thickening.

  • Histology conformed poorly differentiated squamous carcinoma of lung.
