B.3.5 Infective endocarditis

  • Shows dilated left ventricle, left atrium and a proximal part of ascending aorta.
  • The aortic valve cusps are distorted, thickened and nodular – probably a result of rheumatic vegetations.
  • A dark haemorrhagic friable looking mass sits on the aortic aspect of one of the aortic valve cusps (a vegetation or a thrombus).
  • The mitral valve appears normal.
